ORRCA - Latest News & Events
Whales on the Move !

The whale migration is now well and truly under way!

For the past month the ORRCA Marine Mammal Incident Hotline has been receiving calls about whale sightings.

These sightings have now increased to several a day.

Daily sightings of humpback whales are coming in from The North Coast, Port Stephens, Central Coast, Sydney and South Coast.

We have also received sighting reports of minke whales, southern right whales, killer whales (orcas) and dolphins, not to mention numerous seal haulouts.

There has never been a better time to dust off the binoculars, put the family in the car and head out to look for some whales.

And don't forget.....if you see a whale or other marine mammal call 02 9415 3333, and let us know!

The 10th Annual Port Stephens Dolphin Census

Come join the fun at the 10th Annual Dolphin Census in Port Stephens. With more than 120 sites around the Port Stephens Area 30 of which are on the water, there is bound to be one to suit you! So bring the family and join the fun! Make a day of it, perhaps even take a dolphin watch tour while you're there. Details are below.

DATE: Sunday 23rd May 2010

TIME: 1/2 hour - from 9:30 am to 10:00 am

Information gathered from the census will be used to compliment other scientific research being carried out in the Port Stephens Area. It is hoped that by continuing this research dolphin trends and movements in the area will be determined. All tools will be provided to you prior to census day.

Thank you

The Port Stephens Dolphin Census went off like a treat, with several of our members reporting dolphin sightings over the required time frame. And after the time frame expired some lucky members saw Humpbacks! These same members were treated to Bottlenose dolphin mating rituals as well! What a day!

ORRCA - Proposed Marine Mammal Rescue Training Courses 2010

2010 Proposed ORRCA Marine Rescue Training Courses

There has been quite a bit of interest shown in the ORRCA Marine Mammal Rescue Training Courses and when and where they will be held.

Below are some proposed dates with the first one being held on the Central Coast. The second two will remain TBA until venues and people numbers can be confirmed as per Newsletter article.

BALLINA - 3rd and 4th July 2010

This workshop was a huge success with a further 14 people being trained in marine mammal rescue on the far north coast of NSW. Not all attendants where from this area either and several traveled from as far afield as Perth WA, Rose Bay, Armidale and Glenhaven! It was a great effort by the entire ORRCA team!

GOSFORD - 18th and 19th September 2010

(This workshop will close 3rd September 2010 so get your paperwork in!)

 NOWRA - 20th & 21st November 2010*

(This workshop will close 5th November 2010)

*(Due to 25 year celebrations the dates for this workshop have changed.) A venue has been confirmed so get your memberships up to date and your applications in!

Due to rising costs and after fifteen years the ORRCA two day Marine Mammal Rescue Training Workshop will now cost

$120.00

This change will take effect from July 1, 2010.

Why not bring a friend and join the fun! You can and will make a difference!

ORRCA's 2010 Annual Whale Census

It's on again........ORRCA's Annual Whale Census is happening on Sunday 27th June 2010

Bring the family along and enjoy counting whales as they pass the coast. But best of all it's open to everyone to join in and it's FREE !

No matter what area or state you live in you are welcome to participate.

The information gathered helps us to obtain a "snapshot" of whale movements and behavior around Australia on that day.

This data is analysed and used for understanding more about these wonderful animals and how we can best protect them, now and into the future.
