Seals, seals and more seals |

In July and August 2007 ORRCA was inundated with seal haul out reports! Some have had a happy ending and sadly some have not. Every seal common to NSW has been along our coast this year from Brooms Head in the north to Ulladulla in the south. Peter sat for two days with a Leopard seal near Swansea (Central Coast). I have sat with an Australian Fur seal, New Zealand fur seal and an Arctocephalus tropicalis or Subantarctic fur seal at various locations along the Central Coast. Many other volunteers have attended seal haul outs as well and we thank you all for your time and patience. By far most reports have been of Subantarctics which seems most preculiar. Normally you can expect one maybe two reports in a year. So far this year we have had nearly thirty reports of them. A couple have needed medical attention and were taken to Taronga Zoo where sadly they can never be released. And as of tomorrow we will have regretably carried out two necropsies on these beautiful animals as well. Both have been quite small and the thought is they are just exhausted by their travels. Maybe tomorrow will bring more clues. Jean Meaney
